Let’s Learn some Darug Words
Drawing inspiration from the elders that visited us last term, this term in the outdoor classroom, we will focus on learning some Darug words. This is the first step we are taking to start our journey of learning first nations’ languages. We are all learning together with our children and incorporating Montessori materials to help us in this journey. We are using Jasmine Seymour’s book Cooee Mittigar: A Story on Darug Songlines, as the basis of learning these Darug words.
Today we learnt two words;
– Mittigar (friend)
– Mudjin (family)
Following the same method of analysing the sounds of the words as heard when pronounced, we are not focusing on the correct spellings at this point. The purpose is two fold: to analyse the sounds heard, and to learn the meaning of the words.
The children who were a part of this activity today responded very well as they named their ‘best mittigars’ at Montessori and day cares they attend, and agreed that looking after our mittigars and mudjins is a very good thing. 😊
Have a lovely weekend with your mittigars and mudjins!
