Our classroom has welcomed some very special temporary visitors—a lively group of tadpoles! Kindly brought in by one of our families from a property in Dural, these tiny, wriggly creatures have quickly become the centre of attention and fascination for the children.
Setting Up Their New Home
Before introducing the tadpoles to the classroom, we carefully prepared their habitat. The children watched with interest as the water was treated to remove chlorine and chloramine, learning that even small changes in the environment can make a big difference to living creatures. With Liv’s help, we created a comfortable, sustainable space for our new friends to explore.
We soon discovered that tadpoles love nibbling on fish flakes, and the children have taken great delight in feeding them and observing how they move, eat, and interact with their surroundings.
On Friday, we were fortunate to have a parent come in and help us set up an even more sustainable tank—this time with temperature control to give the tadpoles the very best chance of successfully transforming into frogs. The children were fascinated by the new setup and eager to learn how the warmer, stable environment helps the tadpoles grow.
A Front‑Row Seat to Nature’s Magic
Having tadpoles in the classroom offers a rare opportunity for the children to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary transformations. Each day, they gather around the tank to look for changes—tiny legs beginning to form, tails shortening, or new behaviours emerging.
This experience supports learning in so many meaningful ways:
- Observation skills, as children notice small changes over time
- Respect for living things, through gentle care and responsibility
- Scientific thinking, as they ask questions and make predictions
- Connection to nature, even within the classroom environment
The excitement is building as we hope to see the metamorphosis from tadpole to froglets before they need to be returned safely to their original home in Dural.
A Wonderful Learning Adventure
These little creatures have brought so much joy, curiosity, and wonder into our classroom. Watching the children engage so thoughtfully with the tadpoles reminds us how powerful hands‑on experiences can be in nurturing a love of nature and discovery.
We look forward to sharing updates as our temporary pets continue their magical journey.
